Athanassios Katsis

Professor Athanassios Katsis assumed his duties as President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) in May 2026, through an international competition and the recommendation of the ad-hoc independent five-member selection international Committee of Experts.

Biography

Professor Athanassios Katsis holds a Ph.D. and a Master's degree in Statistics from The George Washington University in the USA, where he studied on a full scholarship from the said University.

He completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

He has served as a faculty member at the University of Toledo (USA), at the University of Cyprus, at the University of the Aegean (Greece), and from 2004 until recently at the University of the Peloponnese in Greece (Department of Social and Education Policy).

From December 2017 to April 2026, he served as Rector of the University of the Peloponnese, where he was elected twice to this position.

During his tenure as Rector, the University of the Peloponnese significantly expanded by smoothly integrating schools and academic departments of the former Technological Educational Institutions, joined the networks of European University Alliances, and began the development of study programs in English to attract foreign students.

Furthermore, Professor Katsis has served as a statistical consultant at the World Bank in the field of Economics of Education.

Professor Katsis’ research interests focus on the area of Bayesian Statistics and specifically on optimal sample size calculations, on the Economics of Education, and on educational research, as well as on applications of statistical distributions in telecommunications.

His work has been published in international peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences.

Moreover, Professor Katsis has participated, either as a partner or as a coordinator, in many research projects stemming from international and national funding.

These projects explore, utilizing a quantitative and a qualitative approach, issues such as educational policy with respect to socially vulnerable groups, innovation and knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship, etc.
